Our verse comes from a chapter in Proverbs where our Lord Jesus Christ is foreshadowed. A shadow is not a complete depiction of its subject, but it shows those features facing the light. So it is with shadows of Christ in the scripture, Jesus himself is revealed in fullness in the New Testament but we find many shadows of him in the Old Testament. In today's shadow, we can see enough of his eternal features to know that it is assuredly him, vs. 27 "When he prepared the heavens I was there." The Attributes that are on full display are those of Jesus' wisdom. Solomon calls him wisdom, and in Christ, we have "all the treasures of wisdom." Understanding that Christ is foreshadowed in this chapter helps us to see the instruction and blessing that follow when we hearken to the voice of our wise King Jesus.
First of all, blessed is the man heareth him. Solomon was known to preach to the people. We know that was the wisest mortal to ever live, and never has a man surpassed the wisdom bestowed to Solomon. In Solomon's day all you would have to do is go and hear him speak, He would come to the chief places of concourse and lift up his voice and disperse truths to light the path of the simple. Jesus did the same thing while here on this earth you could find him in the Synagogue, the Streets, in the crowded markets, in the chief places of concourses and he would lift his voice and say All that is thirsty come and drink! He would speak of justice and forgiveness and righteousness. He would speak of himself, not because he was a braggart, but because he is the fullness of wisdom. Still, he speaks today, can't you hear him? His word speaks to us as oft as we will go to it and open it and heed it. His servants daily lift up their voices and cry thus saith the Lord! His spirit speaks, he reproves this world of sin, righteousness, and judgment. Hear him, "incline your ears to the words of his mouth." Look to the intersections of life and eternity, when on your daily routine you find some eternal truth has crossed your path, perhaps in the breeze blowing on you, or in some event that plays out before your eyes, Listen carefully. You can hear the voice of the almighty instructing you on your way.
Secondly, Christ is to be sought, not once in a while, but every day. The blessed man will be at the gates daily. Yesterday the blessed man received wisdom from the Lord and again today he is waiting to hear another word from The Word. He waits at the post of his doors. As wise Christians, we often leave the gate before the King arrives to bless us with the wisdom for that day. Imagine a citizen of Israel who wanted to hear what the King had to say but his day was packed full of business and he came to the gate to hear, but fell short of the later end of our verse and did not wait. He leaves discouraged, without the wisdom needed for that day. So it is with us, it would benefit us to come daily before the throne and determine that if we have to wait then wait we will. Better to have lost a bit of time than to have missed out on hearing from our King. Time is precious but our King's wisdom is more precious than even time, time passes away but his word is eternal. So if we are going to deal in eternal matters today then we'd better barter our time for his eternal truth and then go to our business for the day.
Blessed is the man who will daily watch at the Gates of King Jesus, who will wait at his doorpost, this man will hear from him. Do you long for a word from the Lord this morning? Open your ears "Unto you, O men, I call; and my voice is to the sons of man. O ye simple, understand wisdom: and, ye fools, be ye of an understanding heart. Hear; for I will speak of excellent things; and the opening of my lips shall be right things. For my mouth shall speak truth; and wickedness is an abomination to my lips. All the words of my mouth are in righteousness; there is nothing froward or perverse in them. [Vs. 4-8]. Wait for the gold and silver he gives from his mouth so that you may deal in the eternal today "Receive my instruction, and not silver; and knowledge rather than choice gold." Vs.10. Determine that every day this will be your first order of business, for "those that seek me early shall find me." vs.17. In so doing you will be truly blessed, rubies and gold, and silver are all mentioned in this chapter, none of these things compare to the preciousness of our Saviours voice and the wisdom he distills to all who will watch and wait for his voice daily.
