June 17 | Waking with The Word | Joshua 21: 41-45

Joshua 21:41 All the cities of the Levites within the possession of the children of Israel were forty and eight cities with their suburbs. :42 These cities were every one with their suburbs round about them: thus were all these cities. :43 And the LORD gave unto Israel all the land which he sware to give unto their fathers; and they possessed it, and dwelt therein. :44 And the LORD gave them rest round about, according to all that he sware unto their fathers: and there stood not a man of all their enemies before them; the LORD delivered all their enemies into their hand. :45 There failed not ought of any good thing which the LORD had spoken unto the house of Israel; all came to pass.

Now we've come to the chapter that deals with the earthy provision made for the tribe of Levi. We know that there was no allotment made for them within the land but God didn't leave them to wander around through the land like they were in the wilderness. They had no piece of land they could point to but they did have earthly provision made for them by God. After all their lot was the Lord, their lot was that they got to dwell in the house of the Lord forever, to know the in and outs of God's ministry on earth. They may not have been the most powerful or the most wealthy people but they were the ones who dealt in the spiritual and eternal things of God. That was there inheritance, the priesthood, but chapter 21 doesn't deal with their inheritance but rather their provision for life.

Let's attempt to learn a lesson from this chapter. It would be easy to mistake chapter 21 for the inheritance of the Levites but that would be a mistake and a misrepresentation. As we said before this wasn't there inheritance but their provision. The same mistake is easy to make in our lives as Christians. If we look to the provision of this life and consider it to be our inheritance then we will be most discouraged. Be reminded that our inheritance is a heavenly one and not a earthly one. Our Inheritance is spiritual and eternal, our inheritance is The Lord but like the Levites God still gives us provisions for this earthly life.

If you were to compare their provision to the others inheritance then you would say they got dealt a bad hand. The others received entire plots of land and the Levites only received small sections within the other tribes allotment. Again though this was not their inheritance but their provision that they received on top of their inheritance.

We have a tendency to look around us and say look at what my neighbor has, he never considers God, he doesn't have a desire to live for God and if he believes in God it is only superficially and yet he has more than I. We look at our earthly provision and think of it as the whole of our inheritance. This is a mistake, consider the things you have in Christ, joy, peace, love, a sound mind, patience, charity. This things are above price and are the things the world are striving to have. The material things of this world could never provide or produce the inheritance we have in Christ. Now look at your material possession for what they are, provision, and you will find that you have always had what you needed and often what you have wanted. This life isn't our inheritance but God still gives us provision in this life. We will conclude with the words of Christ.

Matthew 6:25 Therefore I say unto you, Take no thought for your life, what ye shall eat, or what ye shall drink; nor yet for your body, what ye shall put on. Is not the life more than meat, and the body than raiment? :26 Behold the fowls of the air: for they sow not, neither do they reap, nor gather into barns; yet your heavenly Father feedeth them. Are ye not much better than they? :27 Which of you by taking thought can add one cubit unto his stature? :28 And why take ye thought for raiment? Consider the lilies of the field, how they grow; they toil not, neither do they spin: :29 And yet I say unto you, That even Solomon in all his glory was not arrayed like one of these. :30 Wherefore, if God so clothe the grass of the field, which to day is, and to morrow is cast into the oven, shall he not much more clothe you, O ye of little faith? :31 Therefore take no thought, saying, What shall we eat? or, What shall we drink? or, Wherewithal shall we be clothed? :32 (For after all these things do the Gentiles seek:) for your heavenly Father knoweth that ye have need of all these things. :33 But seek ye first the kingdom of God, and his righteousness; and all these things shall be added unto you.

Every need supplied!!
